Ceiling Design Ideas

When it comes to the design of a room, the ceiling is often forgotten.

We tend to focus on the design of the walls but there’s many ways to elevate your ceiling with materials, color, texture and even wallpaper too.

Here are some ceiling ideas that will add interest and style to any room…

1. Beams

Add reclaimed beams or faux beams to your ceiling for instant warmth and character. Including an element of wood will change the overall atmosphere of a room, making it feel more relaxed and inviting.

Beams look especially nice in rooms with vaulted ceilings. They add interest to a large blank canvas and also work well on standard height, flat ceilings as well.

2. Planked ceiling

Shiplap, a tongue and groove pine, bead board sheets and reclaimed wood planks are all materials that can be used to add texture to your ceiling. Planked ceilings can be installed to create a finished look in any room of your home.

3. Wallpaper

For a bold statement, usually best in closed rooms such as bedrooms, powder rooms or foyers, you can consider adding an element of drama to your room with a  wallpapered ceiling. Select a timeless pattern and paint your walls in a color that compliments the wallpaper without competing with it.

SInce ceilings are a blank canvas with no obstructions like window and door openings, they're a great place to easily add wallpaper.

4. Painted ceiling

Extend your walls by painting the ceiling the same color. Fully immerse your room with one paint color to draw your eye up. This is especially nice for rooms with slanted walls and low ceilings since you will create an illusion of a bigger space.

Or for tall ceilings you could stick with light walls and go dark with the ceiling which can make a large room feel more intimate and cozy.

5. Highlight architecture

Paint detailed moldings to emphasize the craftsmanship of your home. Bring attention to beautiful details in your home by painting the moldings and ceiling in a slightly different shade than the walls. In this ceiling design the idea is to make a distinction between the walls with the moldings and ceiling.

A coffered ceiling is another feature that can be highlighted. Coffered ceilings add a high end look to large open concept rooms, especially dining rooms and basements are also a great place to add in architectural detail. A rustic style coffered ceiling could also be created, like in the image above. This type of ceiling creates the illusion of a taller space and adds a lot of detail to a room.
